Straighten and Cut Wire
Stainless wires are commonly sought after, and as such, a lot of people have questions they ask. Many of these questions are similar, even though they are asked by companies from different industries. Below, we want to take the time to go over some of those frequently asked questions. Consider this a layman’s guide to stainless wire. For more specific questions about straight and cut wire or plated wire, you should not hesitate to give our team a call.

What is the most common use of these wires?
Although this material is used for many applications, it is primarily used in applications that require great heat and corrosion resistance. The material works effectively in both low and high-temperature applications. It also possesses notable resistance to both wear and abrasion.
What are the common grades for spring manufacturing?
The three most common spring wire grades are T-316, T-304, and T-302. These grades are used because they are austenitic stainless grades that will not gain additional strength because of heat treatments.
Do any grades gain strength after heat treatment?
The one grade of stainless steel that is known for adding strength is 17-7PH (precipitation-hardening). The material is known to gain tensile strength.
What other grades of steel are used for making springs?
Consider using stainless steel within the 300 series range, which includes 347, 321, and 304. These grades are also considered austenitic, but they can only be hardened through cold working. 400 series stainless steel, which is regarded as either Ferritic or Martensitic, is used almost exclusively in applications like lock wire, fasteners, and in other annealed conditions.
