There is a debate among some experts regarding the advantages and disadvantages of both copper beryllium and beryllium-free copper. Beryllium is a metallic element (silver-grey) that is as stiff as silver but is lighter than aluminum. Mold-makers benefit from advantages such as, efficient temperature conduction and fast cooling. These advantages are undeniable. Some do make contradictory claims about beryllium copper. One of the biggest points on conjecture is the health risks associated with both. When looking at the clear facts and asking the experts, it seems that the health claims against beryllium copper wires are more myth.
Beryllium is hazardous to human health and can cause chronic beryllium disease, but this is usually only in cases of a person who is allergic to beryllium. They must breaths in concentrated dust particles. Beryllium particles must be less than 10 microns in size to penetrate the sacs of a lung.
Of course, it is vital that beryllium copper is treated with respect and care, but even after abrasions, the risk of dust and fumes that will lead to health hazards are rare. Health risks are low partly because the final alloy has only up to 1.85% beryllium. These alloys are only damaged when they are:
- Sanded
- Polished
- EDM’s
- Changes
- Welded
Other machining processes use beryllium copper wire, and they do not damage the final product. This includes:
- Drilling
- Milling
- Turning
Treat beryllium copper with care and respect, and it will not be hazardous to your health. Do not fall victim to mistruths. Ask our experts for more information.
