What Is the Process to Strengthen Wire for Various Applications

Straight and Cut WireAt Little Falls Alloys, we specialize in straightened and cut wire. We can straighten and cut wire to your needs and tolerances. We’ll work with you to create wire specific to your application. However, we can strengthen wire as well. The process of strengthening wire is done with metal plating and heat treating.

We utilize electroplating to create a thickness to match the needs of our customers. We use a variety of coating options, such as gold, silver, nickel, copper, and tin. Many industries and manufacturers benefit from using wire strengthened by electroplating. The most common applications that use strengthened wire are:

  • Conductor
  • Springs
  • Automotive
  • Electronics
  • Military
  • Aerospace

What is Electroplating?

Electroplating uses electrodeposition to coat a product in a layer of metal. The common terms for electroplating are cathode and anode. The cathode is the plated part, and the anode contains the metal used as the plating. Both parts are placed in an electrolyte chemical bath where they’re exposed to a continuous electrical charge.

Electroplating is an excellent option to strengthen wire because it increases tensile strength. We use this process because it increases the durability and strength of various designs. Electroplating improves the resistance to environmental elements such as UV light and chemical exposure.

Aside from strengthening wire, electroplating has other benefits. Electroplating can also expand the lifespan and increase the conductivity of parts.
